What to do after we fertilize

Every application comes with simple after-care instructions, because fertilizer only works if it gets watered in properly. The short version we give every client:

• Water within 24 hours — a good soak moves nutrients to the roots
• Then water deeply once a week — about an inch, rather than daily sprinkles
• Keep pets off until it’s watered in and the lawn has dried
• Keep mowing at 3 inches — taller grass makes better use of the feed

When to fertilize in Guelph — and what most people get wrong

Guelph lawns are cool-season turf — mostly Kentucky bluegrass and fescue — and they feed on a different clock than the bags at the store suggest. The two feedings that matter most are late spring, once the lawn is fully awake and past its first flush of growth, and early fall, when roots are rebuilding for winter. A September feeding does more for next summer's lawn than anything you can do in July.

The most common mistake we see is fertilizing in the heat of mid-summer. Pushing growth during a drought stresses the lawn, burns easily, and mostly feeds weeds. The second is skipping the watering-in: granular fertilizer sitting dry on the blade does nothing. Expect visible results in ten to fourteen days: deeper colour first, then thicker growth. Pair fall fertilizer with overseeding and you fix thin patches at the same time the lawn is feeding — one visit, two jobs done.
