Mulch done right: depth, edges, and what to avoid
Good mulching is mostly about depth and prep. Two to three inches is the target — enough to block light from weed seeds and hold soil moisture through Guelph's dry July stretches, but not so deep that water can't reach roots. Before a single bag goes down, beds get weeded and edges get re-cut, because mulch over weeds just grows taller weeds.
The mistake we fix most often is the volcano: mulch piled against tree trunks and shrub stems. It traps moisture against bark, invites rot and rodents, and slowly kills the plant it was meant to dress. Every tree ring we build slopes away from the trunk with a visible root flare.

How much mulch do my beds need?

What kind of mulch do you use?
Natural shredded hardwood by default — it breaks down into the soil and holds colour reasonably. Black or brown dyed mulch is available if you prefer the look; both are quoted the same way.
Do you remove the old mulch first?
Usually no — if the old layer is thin and decomposed, we top up over it. If it's matted or too deep, we rake back or remove before adding. Piling new over deep old mulch is how beds end up suffocated.
When is the best time to mulch in Guelph?
Late spring, after beds are weeded and the soil has warmed. A fall top-up also protects roots over winter. Avoid mulching cold, wet April soil — it locks the chill in.
Will mulch actually stop weeds?
It blocks most weed seeds from germinating by cutting off light, and makes the ones that do sprout easy to pull. It won't kill established perennial weeds — that's why we weed the bed first.
Why shouldn't mulch touch tree trunks?
Constant moisture against bark causes rot and gives insects and rodents cover. We leave a gap at every trunk and slope the ring outward — the classic 'mulch volcano' is the fastest way to hurt a healthy tree.
