Two lawns can be cut at the same height on the same day and look completely different from the sidewalk. The difference is edges: the crisp vertical line where turf meets driveway, the clean ring around every tree and bed, hedges holding their shape instead of swallowing the front window. Trimming and edging is the finishing pass that makes a property look maintained rather than just mowed.
There's a health argument too. String-trimming around tree trunks is the number-one way homeowners girdle and slowly kill their own trees — we trim to a maintained ring instead of bare bark. And hedges cut at the right times, shaped slightly wider at the base, stay dense to the ground instead of going leggy and bare.

How often do hedges need trimming?
Most Guelph hedges (cedar, boxwood, spirea) look their best with two shapings a season — early summer after the first flush, and late summer to hold the line into fall. Fast growers may want a third.
When should hedges NOT be trimmed?
During extreme heat, and hard pruning is best avoided in late fall when new growth can't harden before frost. We schedule around both — and around nesting birds in spring.
